With Social media playing an increasingly big role in our day to day lives, many companies are taking advantage of this trend when it comes to their hiring process, that’s why making a good first impression doesn’t necessarily have to be face to face. Companies are starting to use different means for early stages of recruitment such as phone and video conferencing platforms. However, Skype has become particularly popular with HR managers and recruitment agencies, and at some point in your job search journey, you just might have to learn how to utilize it for professional means and there are a few things you need to think about. Akhtaboot is here to highlight some tips that will help you conquer your Skype interview.
Manage your Skype Profile
The first thing an employer sees before calling you is your username, profile picture and status message .Make sure that your profile is work-appropriate in order to avoid sending the wrong message. If you’ve never used Skype before, ask for the help of a friend. That way you can get familiar with using it and how to adjust the volume and microphone.
Eliminate All Distractions
Getting message notifications or phone calls during your interview is definitely distracting and unprofessional. Before your interview, make sure that all mobile and desktop applications are closed and set your phone to silent. If you are interviewing at your house with people around make sure to inform everyone ahead of time. Nothing is more unprofessional than having to tell your potential employer to hold on, while you tell everyone around you to be quiet.
Keep your Surroundings Organized
Your surroundings are as important as your personal presentation. Whether the interview is taking place from home or at the office, the interviewer doesn’t want to see empty pizza cartons in the background. Clean up your room as you want to avoid distracting the interviewer from what’s more important, and that’s you!
Dress for Success
Just because this is not a face to face interview, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t treat it like one. Dress the way you normally would to a face to face interview. Psychologically, this will help you bring your best game to the table. One of the biggest mistakes that candidates make during a Skype interview is assuming that the bottom half of your outfit will be hidden under the desk and thus you end up looking polished from the top and unprofessional from the bottom. But what if you dropped your pen and had to get up? Make sure that you look polished from head to toe. Don’t forget to do some research on the company so you can determine how formal you need to be.
A lot us are camera shy, therefore your first video interviews can make you feel awkward. You might be confused about where to look; at the screen or directly into the camera. Try to make eye contact by looking straight into the camera while talking. You want interviewers to feel that you are speaking directly to them. You can also practice by having a friend interview you or you can record a video of yourself.
Don’t be afraid to keep your notes as a reference point during the interview, and have a hard copy of your resume as well. That’s one of the benefits of Skype interviews. Make sure that your notes are organized and legible. Keep in mind that your notes are there to help you not hurt you, so you wouldn’t want to rely on them too much because they can create awkward pauses during the interview. Just use them to prompt you through the interview.
