Do: Make Eye Contact
Avoiding eye contact during an interview will make you seem uninterested. Interviewers love catching the vibe that you are engaged, alert, and involved throughout the interview. Holding eye contact with the interviewer for a few seconds will make them feel like you’re involved in the conversation. This doesn’t mean that you have to constantly stare (you don’t want to scare them!) It’s normal to glance away at some instances. If you find trouble making direct eye contact, try making a direct “face contact” instead, which will indicate that you’re taking notice to what they have to say.
Do: Keep a Good Posture
When you’re sitting down, make sure you’re keeping your back straight, and your hands relaxed on your lap or on the arms of the chair; you want to seem poised and confident.You can even lean a little bit forward when discussing important matters – but not too much that you’re inches away from the interviewer. Do not let the interviewer catch you slouching on your chair; it will give the impression that you’re bored or not confident.
Do: Make Hand Gestures
Sometimes during an interview, you might not know what to do with your hands. Here’s a tip: don’t hide them; use hand gestures purposefully as you speak. Imagine you’re giving a presentation; you wouldn’t want to stand like a robot in front of a group of people with your arms resting to your sides. By using your hands to explain yourself, you’ll engage your audience, who in this case is the interviewer. Make sure that you don’t overdo your hand movements or you risk distracting your interviewer.
Don’t: Move Too Much
It’s very crucial that you don’t give the interviewer the impression that you are unprepared for the interview. According to a study held by Adecco USA, approximately 500 managers who were surveyed mentioned that they’ve rejected around one fifth of the candidates who wouldn’t stop fidgeting or moving too much during an interview.
Don’t: Touch Your Face or Play With Your Hair
Relax. Your interview is not going to be filmed, so don’t worry too much about your hair! If you have the habit of always running your hands through your hair, or playing with your beard (this goes for male candidates, of course!) then be cautious during the interview. The last thing you want to do is distract the interviewer with this body language blunder.
Don’t: Wear Heavy Perfume
Yes, the perfume you’re wearing could come off as too strong. You wouldn’t want to walk into the interview and overpower the room with a very strong and displeasing scent. It may not be distracting for you, but it could certainly be distracting for the interviewer. So before your interview, ask a friend or family member if it seems like you’ve put too much perfume on.
